Amemiya is a legendary figure in the world of mahjong, known as the blind sparrow due to his visual impairment. Despite this handicap, he has perfected his skills to the point of being able to read his opponents' tiles with seeming ease. Amemiya is isolated from the world of mahjong due to his daughter Yume's involvement with the Chinese mafia and her subsequent debts to the yakuza.
